why is the 3D video shows split screen and how to make into a single screen?

Recent i bought a avatar movie: which turns out to be a 3D movie and once i started to watch the movie, the video shows doubles-( same video,but the video is split into two in the screen )-.. * note that i played it on a ordinary DVD player.
Is it possible to 'convert' the video to a single screen format and how?
Its a open question any information will help me. PLEASE
