Best desktops, budget NOT an issue, for video editing?
I am looking at getting a desktop since my macbook pro is giving me some issues. I will be working with 24 mb/s HD video which my macbook can passably handle so I need a more powerful machine to edit video with 3d animation and cgi effects. Leaning towards choosing a 4-quad Mac pro, I'd like to know how other computers compare when it comes to video editing. Macs lack the capability to play most video games but I won't be using it for gaming so thats not an issue. Also, do I need a high-end graphics card if I won't be gaming on it anyways, or do graphics cards facilitate the rendering of videos? The last thing, if you have any knowledge on these programs, is which program is actually faster, more versatile, and results in the best quality of HD video between Final Cut or Adobe's Premiere and After Effects? And do macs or PCs handle Adobe's programs the best?
If budget really isn't an issue, a dual cpu Mac Pro desktop with a pair of 2.93 GHz Xeons, something in the neighborhood of 16 GB RAM and a RAID card (with appropriate disks) gives you the most horsepower for ripping through large HD projects quickly. It also approches the $10K price point.
A decent video card does help video editing. Both for smooth playback, and some improvement on rendering and filters. The nVidia cards do better at this with their CUDA processors in the graphics card, but it still seems to be a less than mature technology.
A new version of Adobe's Creative Suite 5 comes out in April 2010, so you'll want to check any announcements in the next few weeks. From reading reviews, it seems to be a matter of opinion as to whether Adobe or Final Cut is better. Adobe's software is now fairly well balanced between Macs and PCs, so whichever hardware is better is the deciding factor.
If I didn't have a 5-figure budget to work with, I'd be assembling a Core i7 (maybe the 6-core 980X) PC with 12 GB of RAM as a more economic workstation. Still expensive, but in the $4-5K range
