What's the difference in the screen of 3D TV v HD TV?

Is there a physical difference or is it the software that produces the effects?

So it's the software basically that is different, because I remember 3D films being broadcast on TV in the 1970s were two pictures were shown at the same time slightly offset which needed the glass's to view.
The main reason I asked is why are 3D TVs a couple of grand and HD a couple of hundred pounds.

The 3D TV has electronics that flash alternating video frames for the left and right eye in fast succession. The same electronics emits a control signal for the glasses to alternately open the left and right LCD shutters over each eye.

On older 3 d TVs both images ARE NOT on the screen at the same time. They are typically displayed about 1/60 sec a apart. So, this does not reduce apparent resolution for stationary material. For moving material, the apparent resolution is reduced slightly.

On newer sets, they are used an alternate system that WILL reduce resolution to allow cheaper glasses to be used
