Why the need for 3D TV sets?

3D TV sets that are coming out now are as flat and 2D as any other HDTV. The 3D effect comes from using special glasses and image processing technology. Why can´t regular HDTVs display the same image that would give the 3D effect using the special glasses? Couldn´t an image processor, such as a 3D Blu Ray or some other 3D gadget generate the same raw "3D" image on a regular HDTV for seeing with the special 3D glasses? In other words... is there really a fundamental difference in the display technology itself between 2D and 3D TVs?

What you're suggesting is actually on the drawing board, and we can expect to see it at some point. One manufacturer is working on a dual-polarization 3D display that will enable you to see 3D with much simpler special glasses than the active-shutter types being sold this year. Then, farther down the road, OLED displays are suppose to make 3D possible with even simpler glasses, or according to one pundit, even no glasses (although that seems impossible from a 2-dimensional screen).

It would seem possible, as you suggest, to generate a dual image 2D video for which you use the really basic red-green glasses to view it as a 3D image, but that leaves you with a picture with really bad color. The public wouldn't accept that, which deters manufacturers and broadcasters from investing in it.
