Why do standard DVD's look worse on my new HDTV?

Hi! I've been doing everything I can to improve the standard dvd playback quality on my new HDTV. My dvd player is a progressive scan Onkyo, and my TV is a 32" 720p Sharp Aquos. I'm using component connections with the appropriate cables. I've even been switching the progressive scan OFF on my dvd player and turning the "film mode" on in the TV, which accomplishes basically the same thing, at a different stage to see if my TV does a better job at de-interlacing.

Your HD set is trying to fill 720 lines of information from a source that only delivers 480 at best. There for it is filling in information.

You will get a better picture if you use a DVD player that has upgrade capability, however you will never get the best picture until you play the DVD on a Blu-Ray player. That is assuming you use a Blu-Ray DVD. As all the responders before me said, you should use a HDMI cable for the interface. When you go HDMI, I suggest you check out monoprice.com for you cable. They have the best prices I have found anywhere, and they will provide the specification to which the cable was built. I have found no other site that will do that.
