do u need a 3d tv to watch in 3d?

Well i thought i order to watch 3d u needed glasses adn a 3d tv. but apparently the superbowl and an episode of chuck was broadcast in 3d in 2009, and didnt 3d tvs not even come out yet? soo im really confused lolll

There are 3 main 3d formats. The chuck episode and superbowl was in the anaglyph 3d format. Right eye images are tinted blue and left eye images are tinted red. Then you use glasses with red and blue lenses and the images for the other eye are blocked by the color of the lens. The chuck and superbowl episode used anaglyph 3d but they format it used was colorcode which uses the colors blue and yellow. So since color is used any color tv could do it, why they used that format.

Now in theaters they use the 2nd 3d format called polarized. All right eye images have circular clockwise polarized light waves and all left eye images a counter clockwise circular polarized light waves. Then the glasses just block the light wave meant for the other eye. Your tv can not put out 2 specific light waves unless the screen is made to do that. Why Chuck didn't use it.

The third 3d format, which the new 3d televisions are using, is the field sequential 3d format that uses shutter glasses and looks just like the polarized 3d format. One lens opens while the other lens closes and they do this back and forth very fast. Then when one lens is open the images for that eye flashes on screen. Your tv has to have the ability to switch between images and tell the lenses when to open and close. Again why Chuck did not use this format, they stuck with the format that anyone could watch as long as it was a color tv.
